I figured given TWIB is doing some amazing work that his post should be featured.

Wow! OK that was strange, Freeza please come back and spare us more dreadful poetry…

Carine (12 – 4) vs Kelmscott (2 – 14)
Likely Match-up: Hookway vs Verbunt
Last time they met: Carine 21 Def Kelmscott 11
The Cats are coming off a huge win over the bears, and will go into this one full of confidence. The dogs put in a brave effort against the Whips and made them go the full 9 rounds. This week should be all about consolidation for the Cats, they’ve been unimpressive in the latter half of the year, and need to prove that they are contenders. Kelmscott got the jump on them last time around and it took the Cats 5 innings to reel them in. The Doggies for whatever reason seem to love the Cats’ pitching and their free swinging style caused some headaches last time around. This time, I don’t think the Cats will take any chances, Hookway will get the ball and they’ll try to get it done in 7. For the Dogs, Verbunt is the man to start, and I think a good idea might be to rotate through their pitchers and not let the Cats get settled.
Prediction: The Cats have too much depth, and will win, but not easily.

Eastern Hills (4 – 12) vs Curtin (9 – 7)
Likely Match-up: Freeman vs Greaves
Last time they met: Eastern Hills 6 def Curtin 0
The Brewers got taught a lesson by the Rams last week, and the Hornets copped a pasting from a motivated Kalamunda. Huge game for the Brewers, and a real let off if the mail about TJ is true. Curtin need this one to keep the pressure on UWA & Balcatta and press for 3rd spot. They could nary afford a brain explosion and boot the ball around against Eastern Hills, who have a habit of making teams pay for mistakes at inopportune times. Johnson is another viable option for the Brewers, but Greaves hasn’t had a lot of work recently and so this outing should serve as a good way to give him some innings coming down the stretch. Offense wise the Hornets need to do what they do best and get their fast balls early in the count, which is what they’ll get if Greaves starts. The Brewers really have to hope that TJ has not made some sort of miraculous recovery, as they have been dominated by hard throwing lefties.
Prediction: Curtin if TJ is not fit.

Kalamunda (5 – 11) vs Balcatta (10 – 6)
Likely Match-up: C Free vs Tieland
Last time they met: Balcatta 28 def Kalamunda 13
The Bears copped a royal spanking at the hands of the Cats last week and the Rangers outplayed a fighting Hornets outfit. Last time these two met it was a slugfest with 41 runs scored, I expect a similar affair this time around. The wheels appear to be falling off the Bear train and it’s not going to get much easier for them. Kalamunda would love nothing more than to make things even more complicated for the Bears by sticking it to them and coming away with a win. This will be an unscientific encounter, it comes down to pure offense, they might as well be done with it and put a pitching machine out there on the bump. The Bears didn’t trouble the scorers much last week and the Rangers piled on 16 against Eastern Hills so it will be interesting to see if these trends will continue.
Prediction: Balcatta, but just.

UWA (9 – 7) vs Rockingham (13 – 3)
Likely Match-up: Goldman vs J Wishart
Last time they met: Rockingham 14 def UWA 3
This week is monumental for UWA, they might as well treat this game as a qualifying final. If they drop this game and Curtin win, it will all but shut the door on their season. Win and the Whips will keep themselves right in the mix and even give them a slim chance of taking 3rd by season’s end. Rocko has been somewhat of a bogey team for the Whips, I can’t actually remember the last time the Whips beat them. Wishy has done a superb job of keeping the UWA power bats off balance in the past and must do so again to ensure the same result. Goldman has to be on top of his game, if his off speed stuff doesn’t work for him he has little chance of making an impact. I can’t wait to watch this encounter as I know for a fact that UWA are champing at the bit to get the monkey of the back, and speaking to those down at Hourglass, they’d love nothing more than to dent the Whips finals hopes. I’m predicting a classic low scoring encounter and won’t be surprised if we see extras.
Prediction: UWA, just because I want the play-off race to keep hotting up.

Woof Woof

Can’t wait to kick some cat but this weekend. Ask most clubs around the league and they will tell you that Carine is the most hated club in the PL for the way they conduct themselves on and off the field. Lets go Doggies

Woof Woof,
Ouch, thats a pretty harsh thing to say and down right disrespectful to our club. Speak for yourself, then put a muzzle on it!

Curtin beat Eastern Hills 14-3 after not scoring for the first 7 innings, then score 10 in the 8th inning

UWA beat Rockingham – A great win by UWA to keep the play off run a very very interesting one.

Balcatta beat Kalamunda 11-4 – Keeps their hope of a top 3 finish alive

Can some one list the PL Heat team I hear it was announced on the weekend and there were a few suprises as well as a few upset players. Did Tommy get the call up as a 40yr old rookie?

No to Tommy

Along with “ME” can somebody name the PL Heat team?
I really hope that Tommy didn’t get in.
He is a nice enough guy, but wouldn’t that make a mockery of the team by picking someone that is that old.
Surely there are better options than him.
He can’t field and is an overrated hitter, so what does he offer?
Let’s hope that he doesn’t get in and that they have picked younger guys for this team.

Curtin Utility – I hope you’re not really a Curtin player bagging another club, that’s poor form.

I can’t comment on the PLR2 game other than that EHH kept scoring throughout the game, so it would seem they did want to be out there.

The PLR1 game was very one sided in our favour, but not through lack of effort on the EHH guys part. Scott pitched well and our whole team hit well to give us the win.

As for the PL game, the EHH boys kept us scoreless for 6 innings, which seems pretty committed to me. Ryan stepped up for his club and our guys struggled to hit him until the 7th. Great effort for a guy who says he’s not a pitcher. By then he’d thrown 100 pitches and our guys got on top by hitting over the fence – 3 home runs cost 8 runs in the 8th, including a massive grand slam over centre field by Todd. Not much their fielders can do about that and I don’t think you can question the commitment of the guy who threw 150 pitches

No Tommy. What are you on about. Tommy deserves his spot his stats are good and has been far and away the best for Balcatta this season and his experience could help the team heaps. I hope you got picked in the side if you are good enough and have to room with him. you may learn something.

No To Tommy ,
Since when does age take preference over ability ? ” Cant field and an over-rated batter” Take at look at his stats for this season d***head ! If your going to get on here and insult a guy who has dominated so many pitchers in this league in the last twenty odd years , at least have the balls to put a name too it !

Has BWA changed the ruling or can a player start consecutive games on the same day or is it that they are turning a blind eye for strugling clubs ie E/hills.
They seem to be doing it week after week.

Whips Man, you are on something, maybe Tommy by the way that you are talking.
Sure he has been ok for Balcatta this year, but he surely brings nothing to this team.
Yes experience is there, but will he perform under the pressure of these types of games.
Remains to be seen if he makes the squad.
I didn’t try out as I know my limitations, AGE, ABILITY, unlike Tommy….

I can guarantee it wasn’t a Curtin player that made those comments at “Curtin Utilitity” (sic) above on Feb 8th @ 2.35pm. Sounds like someone in the 3rd person also..

Unfortunately there is no way to show otherwise so if it was some other person they can do that kind of thing. There is probably a link to “Safety First’s” final post in the week 12 blog who seems to have a grudge against EH whichever club you are from.

Both teams Curtin and EH made a great game of it in PLR2 with it being close for the first 4 good quality innings. The person that said EH didn’t want to be there, obviously wasn’t there as I spent some time with the EH boys before and after the game and didn’t hear a negative word at all. Nothing during the game either.

Carry on as you wish but don’t bring us into this. They are good people up on the hill.

Sorry No Tommy, looks like he is in. Looks like a pretty weak squad compared to prior years. Does anyone else find it slightly off-putting that of the 20 positions in the squad, 8 of them have gone to Americans?

No Tommy , sounds like a bit of sour grapes old fella. As you said you lack ability, your too old & probally havn’t had a medal (or many medals in tommy’s case) around your neck! Tommy has been one of the top players at our club & in the league for well over a decade. Anyone with a little baseball knowledge in WA will back me up there. Tommy has been picked & will offer much more than his playing ability to the side!!!
Get back to your retirement home and take your pills…

No to Tommy

Thank you all for your responses to my comments regarding Tommy making the side.
After taking your comments and thoughts into account, I’m still very happy with my original comments and still believe that this guy doesn’t bring anything to the team.
It is my opinion which I’m entitled to as much as you are all entitled to yours.
There are comments about his “domination of pitchers over 20 years” and the “medals” around his neck, all great, but the guy is 40 and in my opinion has nothing to offer this PL Heat squad and is holding another possible player away from getting a game.
One player doesn’t make a team and he has probably been lucky enough to have quality players around him over the years which have made him look a better player.
As far as the number of imports playing are concerned I feel that the best side should be picked to play and if that includes imports playing in the PL comp, then so be it.
I don’t find that as “off-putting” as I do Tommy playing, but hey that’s my opinion only.

You have really confused me

On one hand you say that the best team should be picked but then say it should be based on age

You also mention that having an old person in stops a young player but have no problem with imports keeping out young local guys

I must say you have confused the Cr&p out of me

Shazam, I didn’t mean that anyone on the squad is undeserving of a place, just saying that there are a few very good players from previous years who are not there this year. think Sherwood, Henderson, Mcleod, Wishart, Clay, Thompson, Zubizaretta, Hookway and some others. I realise that these guys either don’t play PL anymore or weren’t available but I was only comparing the squad with other years.

tommy has always been about personal stats, any experience he has is about himself and his stats only. The heat side should be like a players trip[drinkpiss]. last years comp ended up being a ringin comp, no offence but stivey[uwa legend]got a game for another state.I also heard that there will be a curfew at 7pm sharp due to pops[tommy]needing his sleep to be right to shag balls and make bad jokes the next day.take a leaf out of retiring umpire vinnies book and give it up tommy. no offence to vince you always fit me in for few votes, thanks for the last 50 years.

Dont know why everyone is getting on tommys back I am a pitcher and have thrown against him for the past 5-6 years and he is not a guy i enjoy throwing to. Yeh he might be a bit older than some but can still battle and is dangerous in any situation with a bat in his hands. Good luck to the boys this year the trip away is always a good times.

TWIB

Another huge week of PL Baseball, the last 4 weeks of the season are going to be very interesting indeed.

Kalamunda (5 – 12) vs Carine (13 – 4)
Likely Match-up: Scott vs Hayes
Last time they met: Carine 6 def Kalamunda 3
Last time around was a tough encounter with the Cats only just hanging on for a three run victory. The Cats got jumped again early by the doggies last week, but managed to overcome them for a relatively easy win. Last weekend the Rangers were over matched by a stronger Bears line-up going down 11 – 4. This week the Cats were done a favour by the Whips, and now have a share of top spot and will want to make sure they maintain the pressure and wrestle top spot away from the Rams. This week should serve as a good opportunity to keep the ball rolling. Kalamunda have a real habit of being a thorn in the Cats’ side and are more than capable of knocking them off. With Hayes due up and Curtin next week, I think the best thing for the Cats is to give themselves a better chance of victory by going with him, and using Hookway against The Brewers, this way they can ensure they will stay with Rockingham who play Kelmscott this week.
Prediction: The Cats have way to much to play for to take this lightly, and will get the job done.

Eastern Hills (4 – 13) vs Balcatta (11 – 6)
Likely Match-up: Freeman vs Darracott
Last time they met: Balcatta 20 def Eastern Hills 1
A brutal beating last time around, and this promises to be more of the same. Balcatta are still very much in the mix and need to get a few things out of this match, firstly they need some quality innings from Darracott, to get his confidence coming into the playoffs. Secondly they need the 4 points to keep the nagging Curtin & UWA teams at bay. The next three weeks are going to be hell for the Bears, with Rockingham UWA and Carine to end the season, they need to win this game just to have a chance to stay in the four. Eastern Hills need to play the spoiler here and try to get a jump on the Bears and put pressure on Darracott, as anyone saw at the Bear cage a couple of weeks ago, he is susceptible to cracking.
Prediction: Balcatta’s offense will prove too great.

Curtin (10 – 7) vs UWA (10 – 7)
Likely Match-up: Grigoletto vs Ottey
Last time they met: Curtin 13 def UWA 11
Easily the most intriguing match-up of the round, this has massive implications for both teams. A win for either side will pretty much guarantee their place in the finals, and for the loser, make it nigh on impossible to make it into the second weekend in March. UWA are already behind head to head against the Brewers courtesy of the forfeit they sustained early on, they have to finish ahead in wins to be able to finish higher on the ladder. Curtin haven’t been to the finals in a while and will be dying to get themselves there, not to mention pour some salt into an already pretty raw rivalry. Grigoletto will have the chance to make amends for past performances and for the Whips Ottey has been their surprise go to man. This won’t be pretty but it will be nothing if not entertaining, there is so much to play for don’t be surprised if it goes extras.
Prediction: On a high from last week UWA will continue their winning form.

Rockingham (13 – 4) vs Kelmscott (2 – 15)
Likely Match-up: Pribicevich vs James
Last time they met: Rockingham 18 def Kelmscott 8
The once invincible looking Rams are starting to show a couple of chinks in the armour, going down to the Whips last week. The Doggies looked great early on against the Cats, but weren’t able to make the most of their opportunities. Last time these two met it was an absolute slugfest, and whopping 42 hits and 26 runs in the game. The Doggies in that game had 18 of those hits, but just failed to capitalise leaving too many runners on. On paper it looks like a David and Goliath battle, but the Dogs never seem to have trouble scoring runs against the Rams regardless of who is pitching, the challenge for them will be in stopping the bleeding in the field. I expect Pribicevich will get the ball here and will do a good enough job, Verbunt has had a pretty high workload in recent times, so I expect the duty to fall on James.
Prediction: Rockingham have too much fire power, but it will be another high scoring encounter all round.
