2009/10 State League Season – Week 17

The top four has seen a re-shuffle over the last week, with Wanneroo dropping from 2nd to 4th after being swept by the Black Ducks, while the four seems to be almost set well in advance of the playoffs, with Melville facing an uphill battle to take the last playoff berth. At the other end of the ladder, Perth are threatening to climb out of the cellar after a sweep of Wembley and now sit just half a game behind Vic Park.

Perth (10th, 5-20) vs Gosnells Hawks (6th, 11-13) – Sunday 3:15pm at Inglewood Oval

The Big Blue Machine snapped an 8 game losing streak with a sweep of the Magpies last weekend.  The Hawks, however, made their slim playoff chances even slimmer with 2 losses to the Cubs, taking their losing streak to 6 games.

Prediction: Rumour has it that Gosnells have sent their imports home with their playoff hopes quickly diminishing.  Things will be extremely tough for the Hawks, now without the services of De San, Gabriels and Roovers, but they should have the firepower to overcome Perth.

South Perth Cubs (3rd, 6-6-2) vs Morley Eagles (1st, 20-5) – Sunday 3:15pm at Grayden Reserve

This is undoubtedly the game of the week.  The Cubbies have now won 5 in a row and are unbeaten in their last 8 games, while the Eagles have now won 6 on the trot, and have added young New South Welshman Travis McDonald to bolster their pitching staff ahead of the playoffs.

Prediction: With the Dale brothers, Hughes and Graham on fire at the moment, it is hard to go past the Eagles.

Wanneroo Giants (4th, 16-7-2) vs Vic Park/Belmont Reds (9th, 5-19-1) – Sunday 3:15pm at Mateljan Park

The Giants dropped 2 games and 2 spots on the ladder after being swept by the Black Ducks, while the Reds are in real danger of being caught by bottom placed Perth after 2 losses to Melville.

Prediction: The Roo Crew will be far too strong for the Park.

Wembley Magpies (7th, 9-16) vs Swan Districts (2nd, 18-7) – Sunday 3:15pm at Henderson Park

The Maggies seem to be self destructing at the moment, having now lost 12 of their last 14 games and seem to be more interested in fighting amongst themselves than in winning games of baseball.  The Black Ducks have now won 5 on the trot to storm into 2nd place, just a game and a half behind Morley.

Prediction: The in-form Black Ducks to easily account for the far from united Magpies.

West Stirling Indians (8th, 6-18-1) vs Melville Braves (5th, 14-8-2) – Sunday 3:15pm at Kevan Langdon Field

The Tribe are in deep trouble at the moment, without much direction at all after the dismissal of manager Justin Hoen.  The Braves are setting themselves up nicely for an assault on the top four after winning their last 3 games.

Prediction: The Braves should have little problems with the Indians.

Finally, the Grand Final of the 2010 Dominos Claxton Shield is on this weekend, with the Victoria Aces taking on South Australia at Melbourne’s La Trobe Uni.  Go SA!!!

So how much money does Morley Eagles have to entice Travis McDonald to play over here? Who else are they going to add to their roster.

Agree with you Jobu about the inhouse fighting down at Wembley. From what I gather from sources is it seems to be one person who refuses to leave the club which is causing Wembley not being able to put out their best team every week in the State League. Really sad to see a club that was struggling for the past couple of years get back on track with some good players from the past, present, and future put it togeher for Wembley. Atmosphere seemed to be really upbeat till the alleged person got a GOD complex about himself. But I suppose when you dont have the support of the whole senior players you cant win championships or contend. All the great teams from the 90’s had great comradely including Wembley during that time.

YOUNGSCHOOL

Old School, that is interesting. I heard that a few players – who are good AAA players AT BEST – dropped their toys when they weren’t given an SL spot. The same guys who were assisting in keeping the SL c*** for the last few years. I also hear the coach has been tough on guys to try to install some discipline, something that wasn’t to be found when he arrived. It makes these c*** guys arguemnet even more rediculous when the Wembley’s best players don’t seem to have a problem? Anyone with half a brain will know that good management comes from the top down, not from bottom up.

Macca, you can’t clear a player from one club to another after December 31st… you can register a new player any time you like

Good Luck To Morley

Good Luck To Morley as they attempt to win this years premiership. Would love to see an Eagles Giants matchup in the GF. Don’t count out Swans they accounted for the giants last week. Can’t really see anyone else winning against those three teams. While we at it, have you seen how many innings thomas has thrown this season

All i have to say is that you cant please everyone all the time. After speaking to most of the players, they eseem to be happy and will keep putting the work in. Some players dont cut the grass so they dont play. Same as every club just no MATES policy at wembley this year. Hopefully we can finish off and upset some teams fighting for spots in the finals and four. Good learning curve for all involved. Next year will be different for sure. Good luck to all teams fighting for their spots

Brad, i heard that you will be back at vic park next year?

can you confirm these’s rumours?

looks like a few clubs are falling apart this year?
inside fighting at Wembley and West Stirling!
I also i hear everything is not so rosey at Perth and Gary Bowyer will be coaching S/L there next year!

my thoughts

Young school….Good AAA’s dropping there toys cos they couldn’t get a SL game…have you seen the SL side Wembley have been putting out each week. Most of them wouldn’t get a game at any other SL club. Odd’s are that Brad will be back at Vic Park next season. He’s gone in and upset a few feathers down at Henderson. Lets hope the club can pull together again or could it all be over for wembley. I am told alot of players wont be back there next season due to the inhouse fighting.

Wembley is tight… we hear from less than a handful! Some Mary Poppins can carry on about “Mates Policies” – Do like Michael Jackson mate and look in the mirror, the fiasco of a few strengthens the remainder. Wembley will work through this like all that has come before it!

Can’t wait for this weekend.. Morley plays The Wanneroo Giants in two games. Morley easily accounted for the South Perth Cubs on Sunday winning by Mercy at the Cubs home ground. Wanneroo stumbled against Vic.Park and are in fourth Spot. Morley are doing everything in their power to win the minor premiership. Are they good enough to win the Grand Final or will they stumble at the final hurdle? Time will tell..Sorenson, Thomas and Ryan will pitch..I see a split betwen the two.

Second play third in two games .Swans who hammered a team that is struggling again face against a team who were beaten by Mercy. I can’t see the Cubbies win any of these games and after the weekend they could be back in fourth spot.

Gosnells play Wembley who are in danger of imploding yet again. The Hawks have been disappointing this year and haven’t really mounted a challenge against the top four teams. The Hawks should win both.

Vic. Park coming off a win against Wanneroo will play against West Stirling. Hard game to call this one. Both teams have been inconsistent this year. Vic Park will be aiming to win both games to move ahead of West Stirling on the ladder. West Stirling another club in danger of imploding. A Split

Melville wfter their split to West Stirling play against bottom side Perth. They should win both games

My Predictions before Jobu does them

Good Luck To Morley – Wat About South Perth? I cant see Wanneroo making it past the first round with Thomas starting to wear down. And Fish aint wat he use to be. Swans are probley the team to beat at the moment they have good pitching and good hitting. Which work in there favour over a 3 game series. Morley have a great hitting line up but when they lose Hughes, House and Adamson they will have to depend on 3 hitters. And Sonnerberg is starting to wear down as well. South Perth Have the best Pitching staff in the league with Kelly, Saupold, Goadby, R.Kelly and Stembridge. If there offensive line up score more than 5 runs they will win. SWANS V’s SOUTHS Grand Final.

Ernie,

It will be a case of who would want to play Morley in the finals. If South Perth finish fourth and Morley finish first, Morley will defeat the cubbies 2-1. Swans will then play Wanneroo in the other semi – Swans should handle the giants. So it will be an Eagles v Black Duck Final.Morley in the GF again, recently they have lost to Perth and the Giants in the GF’s will it be a threepeat for the eagles? the answer is we will wait and look at the form in the lead up to the finals and check and see who is available.

Peaked too soon

Swami I think your Morley predictions would be right on the mark if the GF was this week. Unfortunately for yourself, and the Morley Eagles baseball club, the GF isn’t until the last week in March and between now and then Morley is going to lose 3 of it’s better players in Hughes (best player in the league), House and Adamson. This will open up massive holes in the Morley line up which I don’t think they can cover. How do you replace Luke Hughes and the swagger that he brings to the Morley team? Also I think the Eagles pitching rotation is a little suspect … after their import (who is wearing down) who do they have that can shut down a line up in a pressure situation for 9 innings? The grand final will be between Souths and Swans (two best pitching staffs in the league) although you can never count out Wanneroo to surprise everyone again!

Anyone noticing a rapid decline in hitting facilities at State League grounds? Instead of buying US players or new uniforms, spend the money on facilities that can be used by hundreds of players, both junior & senior.

Melville – Brutal.
Swans – Death-trap/easily the worst in the league.
Gosnells – CC Sports? Baseball Park?
Perth – Could be brilliant. Needs money and attention.
Morley – Lawsuit waiting to happen. Ricochet city.
South Perth – Good for visiting teams. 4 x cages.
Wanneroo – One cage in disrepair. Constant fight to get through both hitting lineups prior to the infield/outfield.
West Stirling – 1km from the field. Poor condition.
Vic Park – One cage, needs work.
Wembley – Converted cricket nets.
