2009/10 State League Season – Week 16

Posted Under: Baseball, WA State League

No great surprises in the first full round of State League since the Christmas/New Year break, with Morley, Swans, South Perth and West Stirling all sweeping their opposition, while Wanneroo took a win and a tie from their double dip against Melville.

Melville Braves (5th, 11-8-2) vs Vic Park/Belmont Reds (9th, 5-17-1) - Sunday Double Header 12:30pm at Winnacott Reserve

Melville were able to take a half game from their more fancied opponents from Wanneroo over the weekend, while the Reds were swept aside by the Cubs in a disappointing display at home, where there seemed to be more people supporting South Perth at Forster Park than there were supporting the home team.

Prediction: With the Braves’ Heat players all fully rested, they should have no trouble accounting for the Reds in both games.

Perth (10th, 3-20) vs Wembley Magipes (7th, 9-14) – Sunday Double Header 12:30pm at Inglewood Oval

Perth are well and truly stuck in Struggle Street at the moment, failing to score a single run in 2 games against West Stirling on the weekend, while the Magpies had a tough time against Morley over Saturday and Sunday.

Prediction: Wembley ahve struggled of late, but not nearly as much as Perth have all season.  Wembley to sweep.

South Perth Cubs (4th, 14-6-2) vs Gosnells Hawks (6th, 11-11) – Sunday Double Header 12:30pm at Grayden Reserve

The Cubbies are on a roll right now, unbeaten in their last 6 games, and easily accounted for the Reds over the double header, while the Hawks are struggling a little, losing their last 4 on the trot.

Prediction: The Cubbies to keep on their merry way with a sweep of the Hawks.

West Stirling Indians (8th, 6-15-1) vs Morley Eagles (1st, 17-5) – Sunday Double Header 12:30pm at Kevan Langdon Field

The Tribe easily beat the hapless Perth over the double header, not allowing a single run, while Morley maintained their advantage at the top of the ladder with a sweep of the Magpies.

Prediction: The power bats in the Morley lineup will easily overshadow the Indians pitching staff.  Morley to sweep.

Swan Districts (3rd, 16-7) vs Wanneroo Giants (2nd, 16-5-2) – Sunday Double Header 12:30pm at Charlie Hodder Field

Swans cruised past the Hawks in their double header on the road last weekend, while Wanneroo lost some ground on Morley with a win and a tie against Melville.

Prediction: This is undoubtedly the games of the round.  I cant separate the 2 teams at this point.  Split.

Don’t forget that this Sunday is Team Spencer Day out at Charlie Hodder Field, when the Black Ducks take on the Giants.  Please give generously for an extremely worthwile cause.

Perth really struggling at the moment, how did tehy not score a run in 2 games against the Indians?

Looks like Black Ducks v Wanneroo is easily the match of the round.

The top 4 is looking pretty well settled for mine with the Braves to lay down a major challenge but should face the same old problems of their Pro boys heading back to the States early and fall short.

A little of topic, but what does everyone think of the heats performance on the weekend?

find it hard to see robby and macca to vic park alot of money worth of players there and gricey will not head back to rockingham till he is done at the top level.gosnells still close to playoffs and wil be again next year with some quality recruits that get here for the entire season next year.

Why would Benn Grice go to rockingham and play provncial ball when he is on the Perth Heat roster that is the stupidest thing i have heard.

Perth Heat Roster

Why would you play for a State league club when you can play for a “provncial ball” team and still be in the Perth Heat Roster… e.g TJ Wohlever from Eastern Hills Provinicial Team

Hmmm

State League vs Provincial… The Perth Heat roster should be made up of the best players available, not just State League. I would be surprised if a guy like TJ Wohlever went back to Provincial next year. Imports who go to Provincial League clubs never seem to know about State League until they arrive!

blah blah blah

This has gone full circle this topic.

Ernie i could not agree with you more.
of course imports are going to stand out in the p/l its a social league anyone and i mean anyone playing on the heat roster should be playing s/l full stop people need to stop swinging of the p/l nuts

r u serious???

let’s get real here!!!! State league is nothing like the good old days…. i remember sitting on the sidelines watching the likes of Mick Moyle, Tony Adamson, Greg Jelks, Sean Jones, Jason Hewitt, Gavin Edmonson etc etc etc in their prime hitting but not with wood….remember watching as a guy now playing provincials (for fun) got hit in the face during a game at parry field during a gosnells game etc….state league has nothing on the old days and most have gone to provincial over the years or play minors for a state league club…maybe next season baseball will show the old potential but until you been there or watched it at it’s highest level in Australia (many many years ago) don’t try popping off about how good you are or the current mob is…gives a s*** load of credit to guys like simon eissons, mark cook, craig peck, peter moylan, Brendon Thomas (the list is endless)…the old state league played by provincial rules!!!!

crazy john

Hawks – what’s with having your lead off hitter batting in the 9 hole?

yeah he was slumping a bit at the start of season but doesn’t the numbers he has put up in the last 4-5 games (7-15 .467) tell you that he should be put back into leadoff spot.

like you said you be close to playoffs but most likely won’t make it.

4 games is alot to gain with 12-13 games left on season.

Cheap Deal

If memory serves me correctly, Vic Park were gracious enough to give a discount because Gosnells were too tight to pay the full price for Macca. (back when he was a .350 hitter, no the .230 hitter the Hawks turned him into) so The Reds will be expecting the same back. I’m sure the Reds will have no problem coming up with the money for Robbie. They will also treat him well too, like they do with the other worthwhile people.

CRAZY JOHN nice to see you are keeping tabs on robby. i think the guy hitting lead off right now is in the top 10 in the league in hitting just a thought. some people need to be motivated to succeed and i guess robby looks like one of those guys i know i would take a guy hitting that well and producing across the board hitting lower order if moving him out of a lead off spot would get the job done… have a think abut it hey…

team songs

can’t believe some SL teams sing songs at the end of their games.

saying it’s passion singing a song at the end of a baseball game is down right stupid.

leave that c*** for football.

Who is, not many teams have a regular reliever but I’d say Todd Murphy, Warwick Saupold and Benny grice, in no particular order

How could you go past a fit Dean White, can through 1-3 innings of great relief to finish games out.

Jim, has whitey thrown much in relief this season? He didn’t throw at all against us in the four times we played them. If he’s thrown as many innings as gricey, wazza and todd this year then he’d definately be up there too.

Jim – Dean White has thrown 6 innings this year im pretty sure the poll said Who Is The Best Reliever In State League This Year. How can u go past Ben Grice, Lachlan Dale, Warwick Saupold and even Don Ismail. Before Dean White u must be from Swans.

I say that the team song at the end of a baseball game is so worth it and ppl that call it G** should check them selfs.
It brings team mate together and not just running off to the car and going home after a win…

Todd Murphy Best in the biz atm.

So i say lay off the teams a people and lets just play baseball.
